Creative Writing Reading Series: Nuala O’Connor. Wednesday 14th April, 6pm. Booking Open now !

We are very happy to announce that our 2021 online reading series will continue on Wednesday 14th April, at 6 pm, with the author Nuala O’Connor reading from her new novel , Nora.

Nuala O’Connor lives in Co. Galway, Ireland. Her fifth novel, NORA, is about Nora Barnacle, wife and muse to James Joyce; it appeared in January 2021 in the USA and will be out in Ireland in April 2021. Her new chapbook of historical flash fiction, Birdie, was recently published by Arlen House. Nuala is editor at flash e-zine Splonk. (www.nualaoconnor.com / Twitter: @NualaNiC)

The next event in the School of English  UCC 2021 Reading Series is with the author Sandra Beasley, in conversation with Eibhear Walshe.

About this Event

We are delighted to announce that our 2021 online reading series will continue on Wednesday 31st March, at 6 pm, with the poet and author Sandra Beasley reading from her work.

Sandra Beasley is the author of four poetry collections—Made to Explode, Count the Waves, I Was the Jukebox, which won the 2009 Barnard Women Poets Prize, and Theories of Falling—as well as Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life, a disability memoir and cultural history of food allergies. She served as the editor for Vinegar and Char: Verse from the Southern Foodways Alliance. Honors for her work include the 2019 Munster Literature Centre’s John Montague International Poetry Fellowship, a 2015 NEA fellowship, and five DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities fellowships. She lives in Washington, D.C.

Eimear Ryan’s debut novel, Holding Her Breath, will be published by Penguin Sandycove in June 2021. Same Page Anthology ; Submission Deadline extended 17th March !

 

Call for Submissions

 

The Same Page is a Cork-based print anthology curated by UCC MA in Creative Writing students. We are currently working on a publication and have a particular interest in publishing poetry, short stories, and creative non-fiction.

 

                            Title: Blue Is The Colour Of Distance

                 Work on all subjects welcome or use the title as a prompt.

 

The submission deadline to be included in the 2021 Anthology is March 17th.

Submission Guidelines

What We Publish

We publish new, previously unpublished work: a mix of poetry and fiction, alongside works of non-fiction. We also welcome submissions of poetry and prose in translation.

How to Submit

  • Submissions should be emailed to the team before March 17th – contact details below
  • Submit all work as an email attachment in a word document (.docx) along with a brief author bio

Please Note

  • Submissions in more than one category are welcome
  • Each category submission should be sent in a separate email
  • Submission emails should be titled “Same Page Submission: Category”
  • Work must be previously unpublished and ideally should not be under consideration elsewhere. If it is accepted for publication elsewhere please notify us immediately – contact details below
  • For poetry submissions, send up to 3 poems. Poems should be submitted together in one single word document
  • All submissions are read. The editors’ decision may not be correct but it is final. We aim to contact everyone within three months of the closing date
  • Copyright remains in all cases with the author. Some work published may also be included on UCC websites

Four Irish authors, Booker and Pulitzer winners on Dublin Literary Award longlist:

Colum McCann, Joseph O’Connor, Anne Griffin, Eibhear Walshe in for €100,000 prize

 

 

Libraries worldwide have nominated four Irish authors, two Booker Prize winners and a Pulitzer Prize winner for this year’s €100,000 Dublin Literary Award.

The longlist, which was announced this morning, includes 18 novels in translation with works nominated by libraries from 30 countries. It features 49 novels, including 10 debuts, significantly down on last year’s record of 156 titles, a consequence of the pandemic shutting libraries and a tightening of entry rules.

The Irish titles nominated are: Shadowplay by Joseph O’Connor, Irish Novel of the Year in 2019; When All Is Said by Anne Griffin, the bestselling Irish debut of 2019; The Trumpet Shall Sound by Eibhear Walshe, a coup in particular for Somerville Press, the only Irish publisher on the longlist; and Apeirogon by Colum McCann, which was longlisted for last year’s Booker Prize. McCann won the award in 2011 for Let the Great World Spin.

 

Niamh Twomey in the Irish Independent!

 

Congratulations to UCC Creative Writing graduate Niamh Twomey  who had two poems recently published in the Irish Independent.

Niamh Twomey is a writer from Co Clare, currently living in northern France. Her work has most recently appeared in the Ireland Chair of Poetry Commemorative Anthology, as well as journals such as Crannóg Magazine and Boyne Berries. She holds a BA in English and French and an MA in creative writing, both from University College Cork.

to brighten my sick room;

Burnt Sienna, Cobalt blue

like the sky above Le Cateau-Cambrésis.

Vermillion, Carmine, red

as blood bursting through skin.

Rose Madder like the depths of a pearl.

That day a seed was planted

somewhere among the beets.

All at once a kernel broke,

roots plunged heart-wards,

a Milori green shoot

pierced the canvas of my world

and I began to paint.
